Miss Anthropocene Album Cover
Track List
Miss Anthropocene was released on February 21, 2020, from 4AD. When Grimes was asked about three words to describe the album she said: "Etheral and Heavy". She then went on to describe her album as being a representation of the death of beautiful things. The theme of the album according to grimes was "Negative, Aggressive, and isolating" this is the beginning feeling but then towards the end of the album there comes the feeling of evolving and hope. The story behind the title of the album is a short one. She felt that the title was a pun on the two words: Misanthrope and Anthropocene. Misanthrope is someone who hates humans. Anthropocene means on a geological time scale-->A proposed name for man-made climate change. The songs in the album all form a bit of a story. The opening track "So Heavy I Fell Though the Earth" is about the lament of the ways women are domesticated through patriarchal forms of control. "Delete Forever" focuses on addiction and the loss of her friends due to heroin and opioids. In the song, she sings over a banjo with a high-pitched voice. Another interesting fact is that she wrote it the night Lil peep died. "Darkseid" is talking about how we don't see our bodies anymore as we used to as a society. "Violence" was a track that she had produced to replace her previous song "Dark souls" which was originally supposed to be on the album. "4AEM" is a song mainly dedicated to the sample from Sanjay Bhansali from his film Bajrao Mastani (2015). "New Gods" is about the desire for New gods and creating a newer world. "My name is Dark" is about the artist writing in character. "You'll miss me when I'm not around" "this is about an angel who kills herself and she wakes up and still made it to heaven. It's sort of when your upset and everyone is being a jerk to you". "Before the Fever" was about the feeling of literal death. Knowing someone is wiped off the face of the earth. "IDORU" is a song with a lot of infusions of bird sounds from the Squamish birdwatching society and was created into a pure love song. This song leaves the album off on a higher note and lets people know there is still hope. Grimes mentions that the making of this album was the first done without fear. One of the biggest things that was standing in her way as an artist.
